Barriers and difficulties facing nurse educator during providing patient education
q Introduction:
Nurses and
patients of different cultural and ethnic backgrounds have barriers to overcome
in the teaching /learning process. Barriers often include such things as
language, communication problems, differing concepts of time, and conflicting
cultural healing practices. The nurse has to be succeeded in addressing the
different cultural and ethics barriers of patient teaching.
Barriers facing nurse educator during providing client education:-

staff, organization, resources and environment
Ø Barrier related to content, subject and health
message
Ø Barriers related to
nurse educators themselves
1. Barriers
related to patient and family

Age:
this item should be carefully to give information about patient’s developmental
stage and help nurse to prepare the content of information in relation to each
group. Level of understanding differs from adolescence, adulthood and elderly
patients.

Sex: teaching
male is differing than teaching female.
-
The nature of disease affects on development of patient education and readiness
to learn.
-
Misconception about disease and treatments
-
Insight ,intelligence and individual difference that every client have different
capacity to learn
-
Ethical issues ,norms,beliefs,spiritual,religion issues and
culture dilemmas
that could hindering growth of patient education
-
Culture ,beliefs
and values affect on thinking ,decisions
and actions in patterned ways and affect on health, need for care and
compliance to treatment thus conflict occurs if nursing care /teaching plan
conflicts with patient belief systems.

Family’s and patient past experience with health care provider’s influences
the client’s adherence and continuation of using health education.

Financial resources and income of client :should be assessed to identify his / her ability to buy expensive
medication, diet and devices, so nurse educator provide teaching according this
items.

Level of education : low literate or illiterate or poor reading skill requires adequate preparation for teaching plan .When giving health
teaching with illiterate clients ,message should be clear ,simple and short and
free from any medical terminology .

Physical condition: patient
with visual or hearing impairments

Language barriers

Lack of motivation and lack of support system

Denial of personal responsibility.

Patient has no trust on nurse educator’s knowledge, since
patient and family don’t accept nurse educator as source of information
2. Barrier
related to staff,organization,resources and environment:-
- time constraints and staff workload
-Lack of adequate materials and equipment for patient education
process
-Noise and rounds from doctors and nursing students
from different schools cause interruption of
health educators
-Lack of cooperation
and communication between health educator and hospitals staff during
collection of data about patient or during conduction of teaching activities.
-Educator cannot group patients to give health instructions
-There is no appropriate place to teach their
patients and lack of sufficient clinical settings.
-Lack of financial, human and technological resources
-Lack of administrative support
-Lack of policies and rules support health education
-
Lack
of time scheduling.
3. Barrier
related to content, subject and health message
-If health message is
long , not clear ,not simple, and not powerful, not update and source of
content not credible and language is
not direct and include medical jargon
and sensitive issues.
-Heath message is not suitable to the patient (age, sex,
level of education ,culture, religions…..etc)
-Lack of time to prepare clear, to the point, simple and
understood contents.
-Content not inconsistent with patient needs
4. Barriers
related to nurse educators themselves
-They don’t have knowledge or skills about client education
-Lack of health educator training
-Health educator isn’t familiar with health content and not
able to use audiovisual materials.
-Personal beliefs and values of nurse educator influence
that person’s ability to teach.
- They have lack of communication skills
-Lack of planning and not able to select teaching method
suitable to objectives and client need .
-They don’t have adequate knowledge of basic learning
principles and teaching for patients.
-They don’t receive any actual instructions or courses about
health education strategies or process
during study in college.
